hāna
As a rural and geographically isolated part of Maui Nui, Hāna is an economically unique area and is treated as its own economic sector for the purposes of the Maui County CEDS report. This ensures that the Hāna community’s priorities and challenges are represented in our qualitative research.
The economy of Hāna is primarily driven by agriculture and visitor industry activities. Much of the economic activity in Hāna, which often relies on trading and bartering as well as cash transactions, is not easily measured by mainstream research methods, such as the U.S. Census Bureau’s decennial census, the American Community Survey, and the USDA’s Census of Agriculture. All quantitative economic and demographic data for Hāna should therefore be used alongside local knowledge and qualitative data.
Top community strengths, as identified by a Hāna focus group during the 2022 CEDS research process, include Hawaiian culture, community pride, and abundant natural resources and beauty. Weaknesses include lack of local services, expensive housing, limited educational opportunities, and traffic.
